(Toronto, ON – January 29, 2020) – Today, Honey Harper welcomes the new decade with a new song and accompanying visual. “Something Relative” is a haunting, melancholic ode to loss, depression and friendship. The video, which acts as a sparse, yet powerful companion to the single, sees Honey Harper backlit and crooning to a sorely missed friend, the golden light behind him bouncing off of surreal elements including a piece of broken glass and raining glitter.

Speaking on his inspiration behind the new single, Honey Harper shares, “This song is about my friend Zeb, someone who I both greatly admired and barely tolerated. He created a boxset of full-length records before the age of eighteen and once performed all of them locked in a cage. He was both inspiring and irritating. He would have hated this song but loved that it was about him.”

“Something Relative” follows the announcement of Honey Harper’s upcoming debut album Starmaker due March 6th on ATO Records. The announcement of the album came in tandem with his song and video for “In Light Of Us”, which premiered as a Gen F feature on The FADER.

Starmaker also includes previous singles “Tomorrow Never Comes,” “Vaguely Satisfied,” and “Strawberry Lite,” the latter two are available to purchase on 7″ vinyl now. The album itself is primarily about the journey to create it, following his mysterious emergence with “Secret” from 2017’s critically-acclaimed Universal Country EP. The new album’s self-awareness is largely the result of Harper’s inner monologues about his fear of failure, desire for success, and the toll that journey has taken on him and his loved ones. It’s an attempt at honesty through the veil of a country singer lost in the stars. With album appearances from Sébastian Tellier, Austra, and John Kirby, the contrast of the songs becomes even more apparent and set Honey Harper apart to become the torch-bearer for a revitalized country sound.

Alongside the new video today, Harper Harper is announcing a string of headlining European tour dates and North American tour dates supporting Canadian bandTOPS. Honey Harper will begin in Europe and then head to the US starting in Las Vegas, doing a wrap around the country and ending at Boston’s Brighton Music Hall.

(Toronto, ON – January 28, 2020) – Brooklyn singer-songwriter Margaret Glaspy is returning with her highly anticipated new album Devotion, due out March 27 on ATO Records. Devotion is Glaspy’s first full-length since her acclaimed debut 2016 Emotions and Math and marks an entirely new sonic chapter for her. Glaspy has built a reputation as a skilled guitarist, and Emotions and Math was notable for its swaggering electric guitar sounds; on Devotion she shifted gears and built songs with completely different instrumentation as their base. The results – co-produced with Los Angeles’ Tyler Chester – are rich, sweeping, and melodic, a fittingly enchanting sound for a collection of 12 love songs. “It’s about letting love in even when you don’t know what will happen when you do,” says Glaspy. “It’s about devoting your heart to someone or something, against all odds.”

On Margaret Glaspy’s long-awaited second album, Devotion, this highly acclaimed young artist reaffirms her status as one of the most sharp-eyed singer-songwriters of her generation while managing to fearlessly reinvent her sound. The results are as exhilarating and defy expectations.

Coming home after nearly three years on the road in support of her 2016 debut album Emotions and Math and the 2018 follow-up EP Born Yesterday, Glaspy was eager to challenge herself as an artist and start to make a new album with a clean aesthetic slate. Her bold experimentation has paid off, with tunes that are her most melodically confident, rhythmically compelling, and often incredibly romantic. The arrangements are unexpectedly lush at times, especially on the torchy “Heartbreak,” and often boast an impressive groove, on such tracks as “You’ve Got My Number” and the title song, “Devotion.” Glaspy announces her radical approach at the very start of Devotion, where digitally altered voices serve as the prelude to “Killing What Keeps Us Alive,” and she fills the album with surprising sonic touches, right up to the haunting electronics-and-voice soundscape of album closer “Consequence.”

On Devotion, Glaspy has not only transformed but evolved. The distinctive personality that marked Emotions and Math is still very much in evidence here. On her debut, Glaspy could be bracingly direct as she chronicled the trials of being alone or the tribulations of being together. She brought swagger, as well as sensitivity, to her lyrics and her performances. On Devotion, she still does, but her perspective has changed: “This record is very different from the last. It’s not about being righteous or all-knowing, it’s about letting love in even when you don’t know what will happen when you do. It’s about devoting your heart to someone or something, against all odds.”

Glaspy toured throughout the USA, Europe, China and Australia behind Emotions & Math including dates with Wilco and The Lumineers among others – she also appeared on NPR’s Tiny Desk, CBS Saturday Morning and Late Night With Conan O’Brien. Finding herself in her Brooklyn apartment after all of her travels, Glaspy admits, “It was such a shift for me that I didn’t know what to do with myself when I closed that chapter. I was feeling pretty shy. I like to be alone and I had constantly been around people for two or three years straight. I took a long breath, reorienting myself, trying to find my in to get inspired and to get excited about making records again.”

Glaspy enlisted L.A.-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Tyler Chester, who has collaborated with Blake Mills and Jackson Browne among many others, to produce Devotion – recorded at Atomic Sound in Red Hook, Brooklyn, where they recorded the bulk of Devotion. “Tyler and I proved to be a very good match in the studio. I love being very hands-on with my records and he was a force of nature without restricting my sense of what the record should be. His instincts and ability are truly inspiring.” They brought in Glaspy’s touring drummer Tim Kuhl to complete the picture with his brilliantly artful and austere sense of the kit paired with Chester’s programming. Brooklyn based engineer, Mark Goodell captured these performances masterfully and James Krausse (Los Angeles) mixed Devotion in a way that Margaret says “she has always envisioned her music sounding like.”

“It has been amazing to be able to stretch out, to not define myself just by the music I make, but to follow my nose toward all the things that make me happy.” A good example being Glaspy enlisting herself in distance education through Harvard University to fulfill her dream of getting an education outside of music. “Embracing being a student has made me feel like a child again and I think that has helped to propel my music forward so much more. My brain feels happy.”

Devotion, then, is like a series of hard-earned life lessons. Glaspy’s evolution over the last few years has been both musical and personal, which makes the album that much more compelling: “I’m learning that life is painful but you take the bad with the good; that love is hard but if you love someone, you make yourself available; that life is short and it’s okay to be sincere. I’m starting to be able to write about these things and it’s a feat for myself as an artist and growth for me as a person.”

Since the June 2019 release of their “perfectly realized” (The Guardian) self-titled debut album on ATO Records, Black Pumas have emerged as a live powerhouse thanks to their “acutely cinematic” (Pitchfork) soul-steeped sound and frontman Eric Burton’s “tireless, charismatic energy” (Rolling Stone).

(Toronto, ON – January 15, 2020) – Banjo virtuoso Danny Barnes is thrilled to announce his new album Man On Fire, due out March 6 on ATO Records. The record was executive produced by Dave Matthews and finds Barnes collaborating with musical legends including Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones on bass and mandolin, Bill Frisell on guitar, Matt Chamberlain on percussion, and Matthews himself on vocals and Wurlitzer. In an interview with Fretboard Journal, Barnes says, “I’m so blessed to have friends like that, super genius guys.” He also declares Man On Fire “the best I’ve ever been at my craft.”

Fretboard Journal also debuted Man On Fire’s first single “Awful Strange,” calling Barnes their “favorite banjo experimentalist/singer-songwriter.” Listen to “Awful Strange” HERE.

Originally from Texas, Barnes was a founding member of the influential roots-punk band the Bad Livers before relocating to the Pacific Northwest. In 2015, he was awarded the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass, hailed as “one of bluegrass music’s most distinctive and innovative performers.”

(Toronto, ON – January 9, 2020) – Other Lives, the Oklahoma-bred outfit fronted by Jesse Tabish, are returning with new album For Their Love, due out April 24 on ATO Records. The long-awaited follow-up to 2015’s Rituals, For Their Love is a ten-track collection with a nod to the past while progressing positively towards the future.

“The album is a record reflecting human feeling in the current state of affairs — economy and politics on the individual, while the latter still has to deal with the basic struggles of finding meaning of their existence,” says Tabish. “Money, love, and death are always real and hard to cope with: what does the individual choose to make these larger themes of life easier to deal with? The record speaks in realness, questions, observing, lamenting and hopefully finding the slightest of hope in themselves, these characters sometimes venturing out into spiritual, religious or institutionalized endeavors. In my personal hope, only finding their self-worth is more important than anything that has been taught or preached to them.”

The band announced the record and released its vivid first single “Lost Day” alongside a video shot in the A-frame cabin (also featured on the album cover) in Oregon’s Cooper Mountain region where Tabish now lives with his wife Kim, who contributed vocals to the album.

On emerging from Oklahoma back in 2011 with the sweeping, widescreen arrangements and haunting, wistful melodies of their debut album Tamer Animals, Other Lives (Tabish on piano, guitar, lead vocals; Jonathon Mooney on piano, violin, guitar, percussion, trumpet; and Josh Onstott on bass, keys, percussion, guitar and b/vocals) had an uncanny ability to evoke the wide-open space, big skies and broad horizons of their home state’s prairies. A reignited sense of freedom is palpable throughout For Their Love, whether pared back, sombre resignation, or upbeat, rousing and liberating. Out of personal and creative uncertainty and recalibration the trio have re-emerged with a pastoral sensation reborn.

Self-produced, the album sees Tabish and his bandmates less inclined to over-finesse. The resultant tracks show the band “trying to capture the vibe of something altogether more instant. I was adamant there would no tricks and nothing to obscure me which I had been doing psychologically and musically,” says Tabish.

Joined again by drummer Danny Reisch, who played on Rituals, the band is bolstered by an array of musicians featuring strings, brass and percussion, as well as Kim Tabish and Onstott contributing choral-style backing vocals reinforcing the overall cinematic feel that permeates the album.

(Toronto, ON – January 8, 2020) – Emily King is starting off 2020 with a bang – today the New York singer-songwriter releases the exquisite acoustic version of her song “Teach You,” originally off her Grammy-nominated album Scenery, featuring her friend, collaborator and recent tourmate Sara Bareilles.

The new version of “Teach You” will appear on King’s forthcoming release Sides, a collection of 11 acoustically arranged songs from across her catalog, due out January 17 on Making Music Records / ATO Records. The record features highlights from 2011’s The Seven EP, 2016’s The Switch, and 2019’s Scenery, including the previously released acoustic versions of “Look at Me Now” and “Radio.”

Sides, produced by Jeremy Most and featuring string arrangements by Rob Moose, will be accompanied by a nationwide tour this January and February. King will be hitting U.S. & a few Canadian cities coast to coast, including multiple dates in Los Angeles, Vancouver and New York City, performing stripped-down versions of her songs. Shows in New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, Toronto, and Chicago already have select dates sold out in advance. All dates are below and tickets are available HERE.

Emily King has been nominated for two 2020 Grammy Awards — Best R&B Song for her single “Look at Me Now” and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical for her album Scenery.
