Toronto, ON – March 22, 2019 – Toronto’s own Taylor Knox’s 2017 debut full-length Love (Cadence Recordings) received critical acclaim, radio play with singles, “The Stars” and “Running Into Love, “. It also had him touring the entire country with The Beaches, along with playing festivals across the globe including Reeperbahn in Germany, New Colossus Festival in New York City, Ottawa Bluesfest and more! Taylor returns with his signature power pop arc; crunchy, loud guitars mixed with powerful drums and a catchy, anthemic hook on his brand new single “City At Night.”
“City at Night” was produced by LA’s Rob Schnapf (Elliot Smith, Kurt Vile, Beck) and mastered by Brian “Big Bass” Gardner (Blink 182, Nikki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar). Working with Rob, Taylor says, “It was a dream to work with Rob at his studio in Los Angeles. We instantly connected over some of our same favourite artists like Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, and Joni Mitchell. I geeked out over playing some of his beautiful old guitars – a Jazzmaster from 1962 and Les Paul from the early 50’s. I liked his relaxed, laid back vibe – making me feel comfortable and open to sharing new songs and ideas. I even got him to play synth on this song which comes in on the last chorus. I wanted the chorus to sparkle like christmas lights, so I added lots of layers of 12 string guitars and some tambourines and shakers. This song builds on the power pop sound that I’m known for, but I feel like it’s taking it to a whole new level.”
This video was directed and conceptualized by Toronto based artist Layne Hinton. It features her site-specific installation entitled Greenhouse – which was installed on the grounds Ontario Place in Toronto. Using old fashioned stage tricks, lights and fake plants, Hinton’s installation explores themes of global warming and our effects on the planet. On the video and working with Layne, Taylor says, “I thought the connection between her artwork, and my song “City at Night” was fitting. The song is an ode to cityscapes, and how they come alive at night. I wrote the song driving along the Gardiner late at night – cruising through Toronto and taking in it’s growth. It’s changed so much in such a short amount of time, and I was just revelling in that. This song makes me feel like I’m 17 again, driving alone at night, cranking the tunes with nowhere to go.”
